IOCL chooses Lummus’ cumene technology

Lummus Technology Secures Major Contract with IndianOil for Cumene Unit Expansion, Promoting Sustainable Petrochemical Growth

Lummus Technology has recently secured a major contract with IndianOil Corp. Ltd (IOCL) for a new 440,000 tpy cumene unit in Paradip, India. This project is part of a larger petrochemical and polymers expansion at IndianOil’s complex in Paradip. The technology provided by Lummus is expected to offer several benefits to IndianOil, including lower energy costs, improved reliability, operational efficiency, and better product yield. These improvements will ultimately help the company optimize its plant economics and support its growth initiatives.

The scope of Lummus’ involvement in this project includes the technology license for cumene, basic design engineering, proprietary catalyst, site services, advisory services, and training. IOCL has previously licensed multiple Lummus technologies for various complexes across India, including naphtha cracker and INDMAX FCC technologies. This new project represents an extension of Lummus’ partnership with Versalis to license cumene technologies since 2007.

Lummus/Versalis’ cumene process uses liquid-phase alkylation technology with a proprietary zeolite catalyst to achieve high cumene yield, ultra-high purity cumene product and a long catalyst run length. Romain Lemoine, Chief Business Officer for Polymers and Petrochemicals at Lummus Technology expressed his optimism about the project and looks forward to continuing the successful partnership with IOCL in this field of petrochemicals.
