Alaska Seafood Cooperative Appoints Experienced Scientist to Lead Science Projects: Sarah Webster Brings Valuable Knowledge and Experience to New Role

Alaska Seafood Cooperative (AKSC) has appointed Sarah Webster as its new science projects director. Webster will replace John Gauvin, who has held the position for nearly 30 years and will be retiring from the role. Gauvin will continue to work on some of the science projects already in progress for the cooperative.

Sarah Webster brings a wealth of experience in Alaska fisheries science to her new role at AKSC. She previously worked as a fisheries scientist for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, where she focused on recreational groundfish research in the charter fishing sector. She also managed the research program for Alaska Pacific University’s Fisheries, Aquatic Science, and Technology Program, supporting projects across a range of industries.

Webster’s work extends beyond Alaska, as she has served on the International Pacific Halibut Commission’s Management Strategy Advisory Board, working directly with halibut longliners. The AKSC collaborates with fishery scientists from NOAA and other institutions to conduct research aimed at modifying fishing practices and gear to help members reduce bycatch and minimize the impact of fishing on marine habitats. With her extensive knowledge and experience in fisheries science, Webster is well-equipped to lead these efforts at AKSC.
