President López Obrador and President Milei’s Verbal Sparring Causes Tension Between Mexico and Argentina
On Thursday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico responded to comments made by Argentine President Javier Milei, who referred to him as “ignorant” in an interview with CNN en Español. López Obrador accused Milei of being inaccurate and hating the people, to which the Argentine president replied that he does not understand how Mexicans, known for their intelligence, could vote for someone who is so misguided.
Despite this, López Obrador did not announce any retaliatory measures against Argentina. He reiterated his confusion as to why Milei would make such disparaging remarks about important figures like Pope Francis. In response, Milei justified his comments by citing examples of López Obrador’s past attacks on other leaders like the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
The ongoing exchange of words between Milei and López Obrador has caused tension between the two countries. However, López Obrador has emphasized in the past that he would not sever ties with Argentina despite any differences between the two leaders. Despite this, it remains unclear what the future holds for relations between Mexico and Argentina.
