US Implements More Measures to Curb Technology Transfer to Russia for Arms Production

U.S Government Takes Steps to Prevent American Goods from Aiding Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: Export Control Measures and Efforts to Educate Companies

In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the U.S. government has taken measures to limit Russia’s access to Western technology and resources. Despite these efforts, American components have still been found in Russian weapons left on the battlefield in Ukraine. Assistant Secretary Matthew Axelrod recently spoke at the Commerce Department’s annual export control conference in Washington, D.C., revealing that letters were sent to American companies listing over 600 foreign parties to whom shipments should be temporarily halted due to the high risk of transshipment to Russia.

Axelrod stated that officials from the Commerce, State, and Treasury departments have been in direct contact with senior leaders of U.S. companies to discuss additional steps they can take to prevent their products from being used in Russia’s war effort in Ukraine. The goal is to ensure that American goods are not aiding Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. Further efforts are being made by the government to educate U.S. companies about the risks associated with shipping their products overseas and how they can take proactive measures to prevent them from ending up in Russian hands.

The U.S government has been urging American companies to halt shipments to over 600 foreign entities out of concern that the goods could be diverted for use in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a U.S official. The Commerce Department has issued warnings to at least 20 companies as part of efforts to hinder Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.

These companies manufacture and sell products that have been recovered from missiles and drones used by Russian forces in Ukraine.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US and more than 30 other countries have imposed sanctions on Russia aimed at limiting its access to Western technology and resources.

Despite these measures, American components have still been found in Russian weapons left on the battlefield in Ukraine.

Assistant Secretary Matthew Axelrod spoke at a recent export control conference stating that letters were sent out by officials from Commerce, State and Treasury departments requesting senior leaders from U.S companies list over 600 foreign parties with whom shipments should be temporarily halted due to high risk of transshipment.
