Serena Williams considers investing in WNBA team

Serena Williams, the tennis legend and 23-time Grand Slam champion, has expressed interest in investing in the rising women’s basketball scene. In an interview with CNN, Williams shared her eagerness to put her money behind a WNBA team, stating that she would be “absolutely” interested in such an opportunity. With her significant wealth accumulated throughout her tennis career and estimated net worth of $290 million, Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian have already invested in various sports ventures in Los Angeles, including Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League and the Los Angeles Golf Club.

While Williams did not specify her exact interests in investing in the WNBA, she acknowledged the growth and potential of women’s sports. With the league expanding to the Bay Area alongside the Golden State Warriors in 2025, Williams’ focus on Los Angeles-area franchises like the Sparks indicates a keen interest in supporting women’s sports on a broader scale.

Williams emphasized the importance of lifting up other sports like women’s soccer and basketball, highlighting the momentum and progress these sports have been making recently. She mentioned that women’s sports are exciting to watch, pointing to the recent NCAA tournaments where more viewers tuned in to the women’s national championship game than the men’s final. Williams believes that investing in women’s sports is a safe bet with huge potential and expresses her readiness to contribute to further elevating women’s sports to the level of global recognition that tennis has achieved.
