Revolutionizing Community Energy Independence: Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation and CalWave Partner on Groundbreaking Wave Energy Project

The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN) in Yuquot, British Columbia, Canada has partnered with CalWave to develop a wave energy project that aims to reclaim their land and build a microgrid for energy independence. The project is funded by a grant from TD Bank Group and the Clean Energy in Rural and Remote Communities Program within Natural Resources Canada.

CalWave, a California-based wave energy technology developer, will lead the project. They have successfully demonstrated their open-ocean system off the coast of San Diego in 2021 and 2022 and are contracted by the DOE to deploy their first utility grid-connected system at the PacWave test site off the central Oregon coast.

The MMFN’s project is currently in the feasibility and design phase to gather information for an informed decision on full project buildout. The goal is to transform Yuquot into a center for innovation in community development and clean energy, building on its historical significance as a trade hub. This groundbreaking initiative could serve as a model for other coastal communities along the North American Pacific Coast and globally.
