Hemisfair requests approval for sports pavilion design near Tower of the Americas

Hemisfair Sports Court Pavilion: A New Era of Public Recreation in San Antonio

A new design for the Tower of the Americas grounds is currently under review in San Antonio. The organization behind the project, Hemisfair, is planning to construct a “Sports Court” pavilion in place of the pond at the base of the structure. This project is part of the planned Tower Park at Hemisfair and has philanthropic support for funding.

The pavilion will be constructed in response to feedback from the public about the need for more public recreation spaces on the grounds. It will replace an existing pond that has been in place since 1988 but has been deemed to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors.

While renderings of the project are not yet available, it will consist primarily of a concrete slab used as a basketball court. The space will also feature a 28-foot oval roof to provide shade for spectators. In addition, it will be available for community events and can be rented for such purposes.
