Finland’s Hydrogen Revolution: Gasgrid Unveils Preliminary Plan for National Transmission Network

In Finland, the national hydrogen transmission network is set to create a hydrogen market in the country. Gas grid, the gas transmission network company, has unveiled a preliminary plan for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network with the goal of developing a hydrogen infrastructure that meets operators’ needs and establishing an open hydrogen market by the 2030s. The route plans for the network are based on a market survey conducted by Gasgrid in 2023.

The initial phase of the hydrogen transmission network will focus on building infrastructure primarily in the coastal area of Finland. This decision was influenced by the fact that a large number of wind power projects are located on the west coast of Finland, and a significant portion of the country’s carbon dioxide emissions come from southern Finland. Plans for expanding the hydrogen transmission network in the future include areas in eastern, central, and northern Finland where new wind or solar power production can be developed.

Gasgrid is set to begin mapping out concrete route alternatives for the network starting in the spring of 2024. Feedback on these route options will be gathered from companies and project developers involved in advancing the hydrogen economy. There is a collective effort to support
