Billings mother transforms love of baking into successful sourdough business

A Tale of Love, Baking and Business: Meet Amanda Flann of As Much As You Knead

Amanda Flann discovered the joy of baking when she started her own sourdough starter in January 2022. Her love for it grew so much that she decided to start her own business, As Much As You Knead, selling baked goods through a direct-to-consumer, porch-pickup service. Her three-year-old daughter, Scottie, is always by her side as they bake together. Flann believes that this time with her daughter is irreplaceable and wants to ensure that she never feels like she’s second to her job.

As Much As You Knead was founded during a challenging season of life for Flann. She found baking to be a restful activity and wanted to start her own business so that she could stay home with her daughter. The business has been thriving ever since its inception. In December 2022, Flann began offering sourdough-making classes which have become very popular among people who are interested in learning the art of baking.

For Mother’s Day last year, Flann offered pre-painted bread decorated with flowers as a unique gift. Now, she and her daughter are preparing to hold a class together where loved ones and their children can create painted bread of their own. Flann believes that this class is a special opportunity for her and her daughter to work together and share the joy of baking with others.

The “Mommy & Me Sourdough Painting” class will be held on Saturday, May 11 at Poly’s Place Coffee from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 per person, and participants will each receive a fresh-baked sourdough loaf to decorate with food-safe paint and markers. Flann expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside her youngest best friend and teach others the art of baking.

Flann’s love for baking has not only brought joy into her life but also allowed her to spend quality time with her daughter while also sharing it with others through their business venture As Much As You Knead
