Nearly 10,000 Missiles and Guided Bombs Hit Ukraine in 2021

Zelensky Calls on NATO for More Patriot Missiles to Protect Ukrainian Lives: Will NATO Answer?

On April 19, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky made a televised speech at the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting, urging NATO to provide at least seven more Patriot air defense complexes or similar systems to aid in protecting Ukrainian lives. Zelensky emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that Russia has launched nearly 10,000 missiles and guided bombs into Ukraine in recent months.

Zelensky highlighted the significant number of attacks from Russia, including the deployment of nearly 1,200 missiles, over 8,500 guided glide bombs, and 1,500 suicide drones targeting Ukraine since the beginning of the year. He expressed concern about the limited aid provided to Ukraine and referenced Israel’s successful interception of over 300 missiles and UAVs targeting their airspace on April 13.

The President stressed the need for NATO to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin and restore safety in Ukraine’s skies. Zelensky urged NATO members to make a choice and decide whether they are true allies. After a closed-door meeting between NATO and Ukraine leaders, NATO Secretary General Jen Stoltenberg announced that alliance members had agreed to provide additional air defense system aid, including Patriot missiles and other complexes such as France’s SAMP/T.

While commitments from member countries were not explicitly mentioned, Stoltenberg indicated that NATO would provide available air defense systems to Ukraine. Zelensky previously stated that Ukraine requires 25 Patriot systems to fully protect its airspace, as its current network is strained by Russian attacks.

Currently, the Ukrainian army operates a limited number of Patriot complexes provided by the US and some European countries. However, ammunition sources are dwindling due to Russian forces conducting successful missile and UAV raids on Ukrainian targets. This has led to concerns that Ukraine’s air defense capabilities are insufficient to counter Russian air force operations effectively, putting at risk Ukrainian civilians and military personnel on the front lines.

In conclusion, Zelensky’s request for additional Patriot systems reflects his government’s efforts to strengthen Ukrainian security amid growing tensions with Russia. The commitment from NATO members to provide additional aid shows solidarity with Ukraine as it faces ongoing threats from Moscow.

However, concerns remain about ammunition sources dwindling due to Russian attacks on Ukrainian targets. The international community must continue working towards a peaceful resolution while ensuring that nations have adequate resources to defend themselves against threats such as those posed by Russia today.
