Record-Setting Performances at the Diamond League: Shelby McEwen Wins Men’s High Jump, Gong Lijiao Takes Women’s Shot Put Title, Val Allman Extends Winning Streak in Women’s Discus and Sha’Carri Richardson Surprised in 200m Race
At the field events, American Shelby McEwen secured his first Diamond League win in the men’s high jump by surpassing Mutaz Barshim with a jump of 2.27m. In the women’s shot put, Gong Lijiao of China won with a throw of 19.72m, outperforming World Champion Chase Jackson who came in third with a throw of 19.62m.
Reigning Olympic champion Val Allman set a meet record with a throw of 69.80m in the women’s discus, extending her winning streak to seven competitions. In the men’s triple jump, Pedro Pichardo set a meet record with a jump of 17.51m, defeating reigning World Champion Hugues Fabrice Zango who finished with a jump of 17.12m.
Sha’Carri Richardson opened her 200m season against a field of runners she had never lost to in a final at the distance. However, 19-year-old Torrie Lewis surprised Richardson by winning the race (22.96) in her first-ever Diamond League event. Richardson finished in second place with a time of 22.99.
