New Beginnings: Haiti Elects Its First President in Months, Promises Stability and Renewal
After weeks of struggle and internal debate, the Transicin Presidential Council finally elected its president, Leblanc Son, by a simple majority. The council also proposed to the prime minister, Friz Belizaire, to lead sharp preparations for a presidential election and to get ready for the arrival of the police forces of Kenya.
Leblanc Fils, representing the opposition alliance of Collective January 30, had emerged as a strong figure in the transition government from the beginning. It was agreed that none of the members could be a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections. In his address to the country, Leblanc emphasized the need for decisions regarding security to free Haiti from gang actions following a low-minimum agreement.
The formation of the Transicin Presidential Council came after Live Together launched an unprecedented offensive in February, challenging the State and creating chaos in Haiti. This prompted international intervention and led to Belizaire’s appointment as Prime Minister. Belizaire enjoys support from four out of seven council members, including Leblanc Fils.
The next step for the council is to elect a council of ministers as Haiti aims to hold long-awaited elections by February 2026. The appointment of a prime minister and the formation of a new government are seen as crucial steps in Haiti’s national political agreement. With support from organizations like OAS (Organization of American States), it is essential for stability and democratic renewal in Haiti.
