Lakewood Church shooting officers to receive mental health support

Houston Police and TABC Officers on Administrative Leave Following Lakewood Church Shooting: Focus on Mental Health Care

In the aftermath of the Lakewood Church shooting, where a gunman opened fire in the church’s lobby leading to a shootout between the suspect and law enforcement, Houston Police Department (HPD) and Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) officers have been placed on administrative leave. This measure has been taken to ensure that they receive the necessary support and care during this time.

Law enforcement leaders in Houston have recognized the importance of mental health care for officers involved in traumatic and high-stress situations like this one. As a result, they are taking steps to provide mental health care for the officers involved in the shooting. The HPD officer who was involved in the shooting, as well as responding officers, will have access to peer support teams from both the department and union. They will also receive any necessary psychological treatment.

The Houston Police Officers’ Union has stated that providing mental health resources is crucial for officers involved in such situations. They have reached out to TABC to offer similar resources to their officer who was involved in the shooting. The union believes that it is essential to provide resources and support for law enforcement officers during these times, as their mental health and well-being are just as important as their physical safety.
