Google confirms the arrival of Gemini Nano to Pixel 8

Google to Release Gemini Nano on Standard Pixel 8 Smartphone Family in June with Optimized AI on Device

Google has announced that its Gemini Nano, a small version of its large language models (LLM), will soon be available on the standard version of the Pixel 8 smartphone family starting in June. The optimized model will run generative AI directly on the device, similar to the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Google’s vice president of devices and software services, Seang Chau, has confirmed that the LLM adapted for smartphones will reach the Pixel 8 with an expected release in June alongside new functionalities with Android 14 QPR3. In a developer preview, new features such as ‘Summary’ in the recorder tool and Gboard Smart Reply will be available on the Pixel 8. This announcement was made on the Made by Google Podcast, indicating that the tool will be coming in the next few months.

Google had previously stated that hardware limitations would prevent Gemini Nano from reaching the Pixel 8 due to its limited RAM memory. However, Chau explained that Google had found a way to adapt it for smartphones by optimizing it for running directly on devices without needing cloud connectivity. The AICore solution integrates Nano without needing to connect to the cloud, which will eventually make it available to more Android devices later this year.
