Disney grants conservation funding to unique school focusing on science and preservation

From Damage to Discovery: How SCICON is Empowering Students to Conserve Nature

Nestled in the foothills of Tulare County, CA, SCICON, or the Outdoor School of Science and Conservation, is a magical place where students embark on an adventure to learn about science, conservation, and their impact on the environment. Operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, SCICON welcomes over 8,000 fifth and sixth graders every year to its sprawling 1,170-acre campus.

Dianne Shew, the school’s director, describes SCICON as a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in nature and gain a deeper understanding of their role in protecting it. Students can hike through the beautiful trails, explore aquatic life in local rivers and lakes, and visit a museum featuring local animals and items. At SCICON, they learn about respecting themselves and others while also developing a sense of responsibility for preserving the planet for future generations.

In early 2023, SCICON faced a significant challenge when historic flooding damaged its habitat. The Friends of SCICON organization received a grant from the Disney Conservation Fund to help restore the salamander habitat affected by floodwaters. Disney “VoluntEARS” joined forces with local community members to clear debris and revitalize the area.

The grant and volunteer efforts will not only restore the salamander habitat but also educate students on the importance of environmental conservation. Dianne Shew believes that by inspiring each child who visits SCICON to take action and spread the message of conservation, great strides can be made in protecting our planet. With support from community members like those at Disney Conservation Fund and local volunteers like “VoluntEARS,” SCICON continues its mission of empowering students to make a positive impact on the environment.
