FAIRMONT — Fairmont’s Brock Lutterman has a quest — making the Class AA state golf tournament.

The Cardinal senior made the state meet during his sophomore year, but missed by one stroke last year as a junior.

He knows what he has to do to get the job done — play two consistent rounds of golf in the Section 3AA Tournament played at Oakdale Golf Course in Buffalo Lake.

Lutterman had to shoot a round low enough during the first day of the tournament to make the section finals, which will be played May 31 back at Oakdale Golf Course.

His Day 1 score of 41-41-82 earned him a tie for 15th place overall and a spot in Day 2’s competition.

“I made it (state meet) as a sophomore, but fell a little short last year, thanks to a bad first day,” Lutterman said. “I feel good and I feel confident about my game this time heading into the tournament. I have to putt well.”

Lutterman shot a practice round the day before the section tournment and is mentally and physically ready for his section tournament. His nine-hole average is 37 and his 18-hole average is 76.

He has been a consistent presence at or near the top of the standings of each event the Cardinals’ boys golf team played this spring.

Mother Nature also played a role as she has thrown every kind of weather his way, from cold and windy early in the season to sunny and warm this week.

Lutterman perservered and continued to post low scores. He recently shot 1-over round of 73 in the Cardinal Invitational at Interlaken Golf Course where he placed second.

He made the decision to continue his golf game at the next level. He committed to play his collegiate golf at Morningside University in nearby Sioux City, Iowa. Morningside is a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Lutterman will play his college golf under the tutelage of head coach Nick Wanderscheid.

“He’s a nice guy and took me around campus when I made my visit,” Lutterman said. “I’m going to try my best to crack the varsity lineup my freshman year. It will be tough since the team has some young, good golfers. I have to improve my game, but I can do it.

“I’m excited at the chance. I spoke with a couple of the guys on the team, and they said the student-athletes are treated great.”

The university men’s golf team plays a fall schedule that runs from the end of August through early October, then competes in the spring, going from the end of February through the end of April.

Lutterman also gave some thought about playing golf at Iowa Central, Winona State, Minnesota State and Bemidji State, but liked Morningside the best.

“I like the campus, the academics, the student life and the golf program,” Lutterman said. “Sioux City is big enough (85,627 population) but not that big,” he said. “It has enough stuff for me to do and it’s only 2 1/2 hours from home so my family can see me play golf.”

Morningside is 156 miles from Fairmont to Sioux City.

Lutterman grew up around the game. He first played baseball as a youngster, but switched to golf in middle school. He learned the game from his dad, Chad, who played high school golf and continues with the game as an adult.

“I grew up around the game, so I feel very comfortable on the course,” Lutterman said. “My older brother (Brycen) played in high school and is now a college student and my younger sister (Belinda) plays on the high school girls team.”

Brock is the middle child of parents Chad and Chrissy Lutterman.

Brock is interested in majoring in business management, plus minoring in sports management.

“I want to be involved in some aspect of golf,” Brock said. “I’m not sure which aspect, but I definitely want to stay involved in golf as a career.”

Brock moves into his dormitory in mid-August and his first day of classes is Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Brock also played football and hockey during his high school sports career.
