First Quarter 2024 AMD Earnings Report

AMD CEO Lisa Su Discusses EPYC Processor, AI Technology and Quarterly Financial Performance at CES 2019

In a keynote address at the 2019 CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, AMD’s CEO Lisa Su discussed the company’s EPYC processor. The financial performance of the company exceeded expectations in the quarter ending in March, with earnings per share coming in at 62 cents adjusted versus the expected 61 cents and revenue reaching $5.47 billion as opposed to the anticipated $5.46 billion.

The Data Center segment was one of AMD’s successful segments, showing an impressive 80% growth year-over-year to $2.3 billion, driven by sales of its MI300 AI chip which competes with Nvidia’s AI graphics processors. The company has sold over $1 billion worth of the AI chips since their fourth-quarter 2023 launch. On the other hand, AMD’s client segment revenue, marking an 85% annual increase, reported $1.4 billion in first-quarter sales.

However, AMD faced challenges in its gaming and embedded segments. The gaming segment declined by 48% annually to $922 million, attributed to lower chip sales for game consoles and PCs. Additionally, the embedded segment saw a drop of 46% year-over-year to $846 million due to acquisitions made by Xilinx in 2022.

AMD is positioning itself as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) technology by emphasizing its chips’ ability to run local AI programs on desktops and laptops. This move could potentially drive new laptop and desktop sales for the company. During an upcoming earnings call with analysts, AMD is expected to provide updates on MI300 sales and other segments performance
