Yankees acquire INF Jon Berti from Marlins following DJ LeMahieu’s foot injury

Yankees Boost Roster with acquisition of standout infielder Jon Berti: Excited to see his contributions on offense and defense at third base

Jon Berti had a standout 2023 season with the Miami Marlins, earning a career-best 103 OPS+. He was considered an above-average fielder at both shortstop and third base, with a batting average of .294, on-base percentage of .344, and slugging percentage of .405. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury that caused him to start the season on the injured list. However, the New York Yankees quickly addressed this issue by acquiring Berti from the Marlins in a three-team agreement that also involved sending outfield prospect John Cruz to the Marlins and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays.

With Berti now part of their roster, the Yankees are looking forward to his contributions on both offense and defense. He will primarily play at third base, where he has experience and is expected to excel based on his stats with the Marlins. The other infield positions are already set with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base, and Anthony Rizzo at first base. While Oswaldo Cabrera was initially considered for third base, he will likely serve as a backup.

The Yankees did not give up top prospects for Berti in this trade. Instead, they acquired Shane Sasaki as part of their outfield prospects package along with John Cruz. However, Sasaki is not currently ranked in MLB Pipeline’s top 30 prospects for either team’s system. Overall, this trade shows that the Yankees are committed to building a strong lineup for their championship aspirations in 2023.
