World Nature Photography Awards 2021: Capturing the Stunning Beauty of our Planet

The CNN editorial series Call to Earth is committed to providing coverage on the environmental challenges that our planet faces and promoting solutions to these challenges. In partnership with Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative, CNN aims to raise awareness and educate individuals about key sustainability issues in order to motivate positive action.

A captivating photograph of two gannets fighting over a fish in the waters near Scotland’s Shetland Islands has been named the top winner at the World Nature Photography Awards. Taken by Tracey Lund from the United Kingdom during her holiday, Lund used a DSLR camera in waterproof housing to capture this incredible sight of thousands of gannets diving into the sea after locally caught fish. Despite taking 1,800 images that day, Lund was left with only two usable ones. The World Nature Photography Awards featured various categories including animal portraits, plants and fungi, and different types of animal behaviors.

Ivan Pedretti from Italy won first place in the Planet Earth’s landscapes and environments category with his enchanting photo of winter in Stokksnes, Iceland. Pedretti highlighted the color contrast of the white mountains with the black dunes and yellow grass in his image. Established in 2020, the World Nature Photography Awards aim to promote photography while also supporting the planet by planting a tree for each entry into their competition. Adrian Dinsdale, co-founder of WNPAs expressed admiration for the stunning images submitted for this year’s awards and emphasized their high quality.
