Registration is now open for a first-time summer camp and a returning student aide
workshop being offered next month by the College of Nursing and Health Professions
at The University of Southern Mississippi.

The Athletic Training Student Aide Workshop, for all high school and undergraduate
students interested in sports medicine, will be held June 10-11. Participants must
register by June 1. The Health Professions Summer Camp is set for June 15 for all
high school students. Participants must register by June 5.

Here are details for both events:

Athletic Training Student Aide Workshop

  • Taping and wrapping skills
  • Spineboarding skills
  • Injury prevention and evaluation
  • CPR certification
  • Overnight accommodations
  • All meals
  • Course/Activity materials
  • Professional instruction from regional leaders in athletic training
  • Networking opportunities

The popular workshop, which was first held in 1978, returns after a hiatus due to
the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are so excited to be able to bring back the Athletic Training Student Aide Workshop,”
said Dr. Melissa Kossman, Director of the School of Health Professions at USM. “Over
the years, many of our alumni first started their connections with USM through this
workshop and applied to our undergraduate program because of it. These alumni have
gone on to do amazing things and many of them now come back and teach within the workshop
because it is so close to their hearts. Now that athletic training is a master-level
degree, this connection early on is even more important to get students interested
and continue to engage them with new material as they assist their own schools’ athletic
programs before they can start the actual program.”

Added Dr. Leslie Oglesby, Coordinator of USM’s Athletic Training Program: “The workshop
has been around as long as the athletic training program itself and provides valuable
knowledge and skills to future athletic trainers. It is my hope that the workshop
continues to grow year after year.”

Health Professions Summer Camp (10 a.m. until 4 p.m.)

  • Learn about a variety of health career possibilities
  • Participate in hands-on activities related to each career
  • Discuss next steps in your journey toward a health career
  • Lunch and a commemorative tee shirt included
  • Networking opportunities
  • Overnight accommodations available at the Hattiesburg Hilton Garden Inn for a special
    rate

Dr. Kossman notes that this marks the first time USM has offered the Health Professions
Summer Camp.

“There are so many paths that students can take to achieve a health-related career.
However, many of those options are not widely known or understood,” said Dr. Kossman.
“The purpose of this camp is to engage students early on who know they want to help
people in some way, shape, or form, but are still determining the best path they want
to take. Students will be exposed to hands-on activities from each of our respective
degree programs (athlete training, kinesiotherapy, public health, recreational therapy,
and sports medicine) to learn about each career option as well as gain some foundational
knowledge regarding how to pursue those careers at USM.”
