The National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator, John Kirby, has stated that the United States will not support the creation of a Palestinian state under Hamas control. This announcement came after Khalil al-Hayya, a member of Hamas’ politburo and deputy to the group’s head in Gaza Yahya Sinouar, outlined their proposal for an independent Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to the Associated Press (AP) in an interview.
During the interview, al-Hayya suggested that in exchange for a five-year truce, Hamas would disband its militant wing and transition into a political party. Despite recent attacks on October 7th causing damage in Gaza, al-Hayya stated that Hamas did not regret these actions as they brought attention to the Palestinian issue.
John Kirby spoke aboard Air Force One and condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization while emphasizing that leaders have the power to end the conflict immediately. He criticized the violation of ceasefire agreements in place until October 6th and called for hostages to be released as a demonstration of Hamas’ commitment to creating a peaceful resolution for Palestinians. Kirby’s remarks underscored America’s stance on Hamas and its role in ongoing conflicts within the region.
