Kelvin Kiptum, world-record-holding marathoner, killed in car accident, confirmed by fellow athlete

Tragic Loss: The Heartbreaking Death of Marathon World Record Holder Kelvin Kiptum and His Coach Gervais Hakizimana in a Car Accident in Kenya.

In a tragic turn of events, marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana died in a car crash in Kenya on Sunday night. The news was confirmed by fellow athlete Milcah Chemos, who went to the hospital where the bodies were taken after hearing about the accident.

Kiptum was only 24 years old and had been on track to become a superstar of long-distance running. He set the new world record of 2:00.35 at the Chicago Marathon in October, beating the previous mark held by Eliud Kipchoge. His achievement was ratified by international track federation World Athletics just last week.

Family members of Kiptum were also at the hospital to identify his body, and Kenyan media reported that a third person, a woman, was also in the car and taken to the same hospital with serious injuries.

Kenyan athletics federation president Jackson Tuwei sent a team of officials to the area after being informed of the late-night accident. Kelvin Kiptum had immediate success as an athlete, winning several prestigious races including the London and Chicago marathons last year.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe offered his condolences in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana.” Coe added that “On behalf of all World Athletics we send our deepest condolences to their families, friends, teammates and the Kenyan nation.”
