The Evolution of The Olde Open Window in Brainerd: A Look 14 Years Later

The Olde Open Window opened its doors 14 years ago in downtown Brainerd as a gift shop specializing in antiques and home décor. This week, we visited the store to explore how it has grown and changed over the years. The store’s owner, Lynda Boyd, shared with us the journey of expanding and evolving her small business.

Only six months after opening, Boyd seized an opportunity to expand the store, demonstrating a key trait needed for small business owners: flexibility. She emphasized the importance of adapting to the market’s demands and being able to envision the potential of the business. Over the years, The Olde Open Window has transformed, especially with the closure of big box stores in the area providing opportunities for growth.

Boyd credits the store’s success to the power of word of mouth marketing. With a strong following on social media and a loyal customer base built over 14 years, the store continues to listen to feedback and add products based on customer preferences. The sense of community among small businesses in the Brainerd Lakes Area is evident, as businesses support each other and refer customers to one another.

With 20 local businesses and vendors featured in the store, The Olde Open Window serves as a beacon of success and guidance for other small businesses in the area. Boyd shared that many aspiring business owners seek advice and inspiration from their experience and growth. The store’s longevity and commitment to excellent customer service have established it as a cornerstone of the local business community.
