As a rigorous seven-month program, The Basic School in the United States Marine Corps is designed to challenge newly commissioned second lieutenants both physically, academically, and tactically. Chief video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days inside this training facility at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, observing five different companies as they progressed through various stages of their training.
During their time at The Basic School, officers are trained to lead enlisted Marines in combat scenarios. One unique aspect of this training involves officers taking on the roles of enlisted Marines themselves to gain firsthand experience in the tasks they will later delegate to their subordinates. This immersive approach allows officers to develop a deep understanding of their troops’ capabilities and limitations, enabling them to make informed decisions in high-pressure situations.
The culminating event of The Basic School is The War, a crucible where students are divided into opposing forces and must strategically battle to seize and defend a city. This intense competition tests the officers’ leadership skills, teamwork abilities, and adaptability under fire. It also offers an opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to learn from one another and work together towards a common goal.
In addition to American service members, The Basic School also hosts officers from countries like Greece, the Bahamas, and the Netherlands. This diversity in attendance adds a unique international perspective to the training program. Officers from different cultures bring different perspectives and experiences that enrich the training process and provide valuable insights into global military operations.
Overall, Flanagan’s observations offer a glimpse into the intense and comprehensive training that new Marine Corps officers undergo as they prepare to lead their fellow Marines in the field. From physical fitness routines to strategic planning sessions, every aspect of The Basic School is designed to push officers out of their comfort zones and prepare them for success as leaders on the battlefield.
