Castaways stranded on an African island pursue a passing cruise ship

Stranded Passengers Left to Fend for Themselves: A Tale of Survival at Sea

Stranded Norwegian Cruise Passengers Left Without Access to Medications and Credit Cards

Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers found themselves stranded on the African island state of São Tomé and Príncipe as their cruise ship sailed up the west coast of Africa. The unfortunate incident occurred during a tour on the island, leaving Jill and Jay Campbell, a couple from South Carolina, without access to medications or accepted credit cards. Despite their efforts to contact the ship’s captain and board a small boat provided by the local Coast Guard, the passengers were not picked up by the ship.

The Campbells, along with six other passengers including two elderly individuals and a pregnant woman, were left without any resources on the island. In an attempt to help their fellow stranded passengers, the Campbells used their Visa card to pay for food and accommodations. However, after failing to rejoin their ship in Gambia, they made another effort near the Senegalese coast in hopes of reuniting with their cruise ship.

Unfortunately, despite missing out on medical care and credit card transactions, the Campbells were still able to find resources that enabled them to survive until they were rescued. The shipping company stated that it was ultimately the responsibility of the guests to ensure they returned to the ship on time. Despite this unfortunate situation, it is clear that there are many resources available for those who may find themselves stranded or lost at sea.
