STAMFORD, CT — Final weekend, 4 Stamford Higher College students won initially location at the U.S. International Studying and Observations to Advantage the Atmosphere (GLOBE) Student Investigation Symposium for their investigation primarily based on nanotechnology.

GLOBE is a worldwide science and education system that presents a curriculum written by NASA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Science Foundation for K-12 schools.

A total of seven SHS students, below the path of SHS teacher Susan Dougherty, had been amongst student researchers from across the nation to compete in the occasion at the University of Texas at Tyler. The trip was created probable by way of grants from NASA, NOAA and the NSF.

“Greatest Use of the Investigation Course of action” for their project entitled, “The Efficacy of Graphene in Stopping Gamma Radiation on Cancer Cells.”

“The GLOBE Science Symposium is properly respected by each the academic and science communities and SHS students’ investigation was pretty properly received. The students worked on their investigation immediately after college, evenings and weekends, although managing sports, extracurriculars and complete course loads,” Dougherty stated in a news release. “They demonstrated outstanding 21st-century capabilities which includes collaboration, communication, creativity, and important pondering. They competed with some of the major student researchers in the nation and it essential their grit and perseverance to win. We are all so proud of them.”

Dougherty has been a GLOBE certified teacher for 15 years, and hosts month-to-month virtual “Water Cooler” expert improvement events for teachers from across the United States. Dougherty will serve as the GLOBE keynote speaker at their annual meeting getting held this July in Denver, Colo.

The group also won the Peer Overview Prize, an honor awarded to the group that received the most votes from their competitor peer reviewers. The group was presented with a Crystal Award, medals and now has the chance to have their investigation published on the NASA and GLOBE internet sites.

The students’ investigation lately won second location out of 240 teams at the UB RISE Student Investigation Symposium held final month at the University of Bridgeport.

In addition, the group has submitted their experiment for the Application for Spaceflight. If chosen, their experiment will be launched from a NASA facility in the summer season of 2023.

“This is just one more instance of the varieties of possibilities our students have access to although attending SHS,” stated SHS Principal Matt Forker in a news release. “Mrs. Dougherty’s passion for space science is infectious to our students, pushing them beyond their exemplary achievements.”

The SHS group of Shreyans Daga, Nitish Gannu, and Rihan Thajeer also participated in the weekend competitors in Texas.

All through the symposium festivities, students networked with STEM experts and educators, discovered to fly drones, fished for macroinvertebrates, and measured with a clinometer.
