Salvini remains in power after surviving no-confidence motion in Italy

Salvini’s Fate: How Support from Lega Allies and the European Elections May Determine Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister’s Future”.

In Rome, Italy, the motion of no confidence against Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini was unsuccessful. Salvini, who is also the leader of the right-wing populist party Lega, received overwhelming support from the coalition of three center-right parties during a session in the Chamber of Deputies. With 209 MPs voting against the motion, Salvini retains his position as transport minister and deputy head of government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Salvini gained notoriety in Germany for his strict measures against boat refugees and rescue organizations during his previous role as interior minister. In recent months, his statements regarding Russia have sparked criticism at home, with some interpreting them as closely aligning with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. Salvini has also faced scrutiny for his past connections with Putin.

As tensions rise between Italy and Russia over Ukraine, Salvini’s recent comments have been met with skepticism by many Italians who see him as too close to Moscow’s interests. In an effort to distance himself from any association with Putin or Russia, Salvini distanced himself from a 2017 agreement with the Kremlin’s United Russia party leading up to the vote of no confidence. Criticism of Salvini within the Lega has also emerged, adding to pressure on him to maintain a neutral stance on international relations.

The upcoming European elections in June are seen as significant for both Italy and salvini’s leadership within Lega party. If Lega underperforms in these elections, it could potentially put salvini’s leadership at risk. Currently polling below ten percent, trailing behind Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia party which has shifted towards center since gaining power in 2019 election where Lega secured over 34% of vote . This shift could make it harder for salvini to maintain control over his party and influence on Italian politics.
