LSSU initiative seeks to enhance student accessibility to mental health services

Revolutionizing Mental Health Support: LSSU Launches New Uwill Program for Enhanced Access to Counseling Services

Lake Superior State University is launching a new program called Uwill to provide students with enhanced access to mental health resources. The initiative will offer teletherapy and crisis support, connecting students with licensed therapists customized to their individual needs. This initiative complements existing counseling services designed to identify and help students facing mental health crises.

LSSU officials are backing this initiative in response to the growing mental health challenges faced by young adults and college students, as indicated by recent survey data. Nearly half of college students surveyed felt they needed help with mental health issues in the past year, yet a majority did not receive any counseling or therapy.

Expanding access to mental health support is also a key component of LSSU’s five-year strategic plan, which aims to improve first-year student retention by providing more support for first-generation, Pell Grant-eligible, and other underrepresented student populations. Anya Alexander, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, emphasizes that offering free clinical mental health counseling and support is an integral part of the university’s commitment to student success. By investing in teletherapy, LSSU aims to provide students with high-quality care and support tailored to their specific needs, enabling them to reach their full personal and academic potential.

The Uwill student and therapist matching platform has already been successfully implemented at several other educational institutions nationwide.
