Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

Revitalizing Health: The Indiana Black Barbershop Initiative Empowers Men of Color

The annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative is set to take place this Saturday in Evansville, with several locations participating. This statewide effort aims to provide the community with free health screenings and education on chronic diseases, recognizing the crucial role that barbershops play in the health of Black men.

Black barbershops often serve as a therapy center and a place of healing for Black men, built on a strong relationship of trust between the men and their barbers. This makes them an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage Black men to seek preventative medical care.

Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health show that Black men have the highest mortality rate of any group in Indiana, and prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men in Indiana than any other racial or ethnic group. Recognizing these health disparities, the Black Barbershop Health Initiative aims to provide accessible health resources to the community.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with seven participating locations in Evansville, including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being.
