Renowned Worldwide, William Wulf’s Like for Personal computer Science and Teaching Grounded Him at UVA
Wulf, who received his doctorate in 1968, helped establish the laptop science division at UVA, which was amongst the 1st U.S. universities to do so. Just after getting his degree, Wulf joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, exactly where he became recognized for his programming languages, software program and laptop architecture styles. He left Carnegie Mellon to commence a software program business that was later purchased by Texas Instruments.
Wulf returned to UVA in 1990, retiring in 2012 as the AT&T Professor of Personal computer Science Emeritus, and was an influential leader in the department’s undergraduate and graduate applications in education and analysis. He gained international renown as director of the National Science Foundation’s Personal computer and Data Science and Engineering analysis directorate and for his leadership as president of the National Academy of Engineering for 11 years.
“I try to remember Bill for his towering intellect, his open and generally-friendly manner, his immense dedication to public service, and his conviction that all laptop science faculty have gifts to offer you each our educational neighborhood and the basic public,” Alfred “Alf” Weaver, professor emeritus, stated.
UVA Engineering Dean Jennifer L. West stated Wulf’s influence has been incalculable.
