Northern Illinois University (NIU) has been awarded a $158,531 Susan Harwood Federal Safety Health Training Grant to advance workplace safety and health training. The grant aims to provide mental health and suicide prevention training to employers and employees, with a focus on small businesses and hard-to-reach, at-risk construction and general industry workers.
The training topics covered in the sessions will include recognition, avoidance, and mental health stressor prevention. The training courses will be led by John Newquist, an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer and will range from two to four hours in length. These sessions will be available in face-to-face, virtual, and on-site delivery formats.
All of these courses and training opportunities will be provided through the university’s continuing and professional education unit and the National Safety Education Center.
