New Rhode Island Department of Health Acting Director Brings Wealth of Experience to the Position

In recent news, Governor Dan McKee announced the appointment of a new acting director at the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH). Dr. Utpala Bandy, who has been serving as director since 2019, will retire on March 29th. The Governor expressed his gratitude for Bandy’s leadership and service to the people of Rhode Island.

While the search for a permanent RIDOH director is ongoing, Dr. Staci Fischer has been appointed as the acting director. Fischer brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Chief Administrative Officer of the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline since 2023. She previously spent 15 years practicing medicine at Rhode Island Hospital and has overseen the training of medical residents and fellows at Lifespan.

Fischer is also board-certified in infectious diseases and has held positions with the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education. Her experience in infectious disease fellowship program management will be particularly valuable in leading RIDOH during these challenging times.

The appointment of Fischer as acting director signals a continued commitment to public health and leadership within RIDOH under the guidance of Governor Dan McKee. With her expertise and dedication to public health, Fischer is well-equipped to lead RIDOH during this critical period.
