The National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) recently opened a new Adaptive Program Center at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Colorado. The center was celebrated with a Field Day event, attended by over 100 students from Aurora Public Schools, along with representatives from The Hartford, Move United, Jefferson County Officials, and Denver Broncos alumni.
During the Field Day event, students had the opportunity to participate in various activities such as an obstacle course, archery, and trying out adaptive cycles. The NSCD received a $50,000 grant from The Hartford to purchase new adaptive cycles for the launch of a new adaptive cycling program.
Julie Taulman, president and CEO of the NSCD, expressed that the new program center provides a convenient location for people to experience outdoor activities in a safe environment. “We are thrilled to offer this new center and provide opportunities for individuals of all abilities to engage in sports and activities,” she said. “Our goal is to help participants become active all year round.”
The center offers 100 acres of land with easy access to trails, where they will offer a variety of programs and lessons throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons. Participants can choose from different sports and activities such as wheelchair basketball, adaptive skiing and snowboarding, handcycling and more.
“We want our participants to not only enjoy physical activity but also socialize with others,” said Taulman. “We believe that sports have the power to bring people together and create lasting friendships.”
