Medal Tally, Indian Victors, and Results of the World Athletics Championships 2023

India concluded the 19th edition of the World Athletics Championships, also known as Budapest 23, with a total of one medal. Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Tokyo Olympics champion, secured the gold in the men’s javelin throw competition, becoming the first Indian athlete to become a world champion. This marked India’s third-ever medal at the World Athletics Championships, with previous honors going to Anju Bobby George’s bronze in long jump at Paris 2003 and Neeraj’s silver at Oregon 2022.

Aside from Neeraj Chopra’s remarkable performance, the Indian men’s 4x400m relay team set an Asian record at the championship. Additionally, Parul Chaudhary broke the national record and qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event.

The Indian contingent for the world athletics championships comprised 23 men and four women, totaling 27 athletes. Among them were prominent national record holders such as Avinash Sable, Jyothi Yarraji, Jeswin Aldrin, and Praveen Chithravel. Noteworthy members of the Indian team included Murali Sreeshankar, Eldhose Paul, Shaili Singh, DP Manu, Annu Rani, and Abdulla Aboobacker.

India competed in a total of 15 events, with 11 for men and four for women, at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest. The men’s team participated in disciplines such as the 800m, 1500m, 400mH, 3000m SC, high jump, long jump, triple jump, javelin throw, 20km race walk, and 4x400m relay. The women’s team competed in the 100mH, 3000m SC, long jump, and javelin throw events.

In conclusion, Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event was the highlight of India’s performance at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest. The Indian team showcased their capabilities and broke records in various events, cementing their presence on the international athletics stage.
