Japan’s Fifth Lunar Landing: Achievements and Challenges in Space Exploration

Japan has achieved the fifth successful landing of a spacecraft on the moon with its Slim moon lander. The Japanese Space Administration (Jaxa) confirmed the lander’s awakening after a two-week lunar night and shared a picture taken by Slim of the Moon’s crater. However, the lander faced challenges due to hitting the Moon’s surface at an incorrect angle, causing its solar panels to not face the right direction. Furthermore, it is not designed to endure extreme cold temperatures at night, which can drop to 130 degrees below zero.

This success adds Japan to the list of countries that have accomplished this feat, including the United States, Russia (at the time Soviet Union), China, and India.
