Lower sales in Argentina result in lower inflation in January compared to December

Inflation Rates Tumble in Argentina: Experts Predict Falling Prices for January

On Wednesday, January 14th, the INDEC will release the inflation data for the month. According to experts, the rate is expected to fall between 20% and 23%. Despite this, it remained lower than December’s rate of 25.5%. The third week of January saw a slight decrease in the inflation rate.

In Buenos Aires, the government reported an increase of 21.7% in January – the highest since the start of the statistical series in 2012. The interannual variation of the index was recorded at 238.5%.

Economist RocĂo Bisang from EcoGo predicts that her inflation estimate for January is 21,2%. She noted that there were several areas where price increases stood out, such as Health and Transportation. In Health, increases in prepaid bills were particularly noticeable while in Transportation, gasoline and train and bus prices weighed heavily.

Lorenzo Sigaut Gravina, director of Equilibra consulting firm, forecasts preliminary data for January at a lower rate than December’s (22.5%). He attributes this slowdown to a decrease in purchasing power due to wages falling behind prices, which led to a decrease in demand for cars, shopping malls, supermarkets and other goods and services.

According to Ferreres & Associados study based on over fifteen thousand GBA prices of goods and services, January’s inflation is estimated to end close to 18%, with an interannual growth of around 244.5%. Core inflation advanced at a monthly rate of around 19.5%, marking an increase of over 268% annually – this marks a significant increase compared to previous years.
