DOH-Marion to Offer ‘Staying Healthy as You Age’ Class

Healthy Aging Workshop: Promoting Heart Health and Well-being for Seniors in Marion County

The Florida Department of Health in Marion County (DOH-Marion) is hosting a “Staying Healthy as You Age” class for seniors aged 55 and over on Thursday, February 22, 2024. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at the Marion Oaks Community Center located at 280 Marion Oaks Lane in Ocala, FL 34473.

February is American Heart Month, a time to increase awareness about heart disease and promote prevention and treatment in the community. DOH-Marion encourages all Floridians to adopt a lifestyle that promotes heart health and well-being, including maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, adding physical activity into their weekly schedule, and eating nutritious foods that support a healthy cardiovascular system. Heart disease is the leading cause of death nationally as well as in Florida.

The department is partnering with Marion County Senior Services to offer the class for seniors aged 55 and over. The class aims to help participants discover ways to promote healthy aging, including maintaining a positive attitude, following a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, getting regular medical check-ups, stimulating the brain with mental exercises, and leading an active social life.

There is no need to register in advance for the class. For more information on how to attend or any questions about the program can be directed towards Melissa Marino at [352-644-2624](ntouch://call/352%20644%202624 “Call 352-644-2624 using Sorenson VRS”) .
