In a rare medical emergency, a 14-year-old boy who plays football at an academy in Gia Lai experienced Quincke’s edema (angioedema) after consuming candy-like cough medicine. On April 2, the boy was rushed to Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital for emergency treatment. He had developed papular rashes all over his body that were swollen, red, and itchy, along with difficulty swallowing, a choking sensation in his neck, and trouble breathing.

Doctors diagnosed him with Quincke’s edema (angioedema) – a dangerous complication of anaphylaxis. His family mentioned that he had been consuming cough pills bought from the pharmacy, which led to his swollen eyes, lips, and itchy rashes. The doctors administered emergency treatment for anaphylactic shock, including adrenaline, warming, rehydration, and oxygen. By April 3, the patient’s condition had stabilized and he was expected to be discharged in a few days.
