Fitch freshman Abby Toth celebrates as she rounds third immediately after hitting the game-ending property run in an 11-1 victory for the Falcons more than Mentor.
AUSTINTOWN — When it rains it pours.
Not just the climate, but the Austintown Fitch bats.
As soon as the Falcons got rolling Friday, there was no stopping them in a six-inning, 11-1 victory more than Mentor.
It took a bit for Fitch to catch their bearings at the plate, but beginning in the fourth, the Falcons strung runs collectively — two in the fourth, 4 in the fifth and 3 in the sixth to cap the evening off.
“We preached to them just to shorten their swings up, get the get in touch with and do not attempt to do as well considerably,” assistant coach Bob Jones mentioned. “We get ourselves in difficulty when we attempt to lift the ball. The property run swings, they had been level, they met the ball, they barreled it up and it was gone. Household runs are good, but I’m proud when we get a runner on third with significantly less than two outs and they give me a ground ball in play and I get a run due to the fact with Sydnie Watts, it does not take that several runs for us to win a game. Every single run we can place on the board is significant.”
Fitch got it began with freshman Abby Toth and senior Caitlin Mitchell crossing property to place the Falcons up by two.
The solo property run by Mentor’s Abby Haydu was the initial run Fitch (four-) had surrendered all year.
That is not just to the credit of sophomore ace Sydnie Watts, who racked up 12 strikeouts on Friday, but to the credit of the Fitch fielders, who are playing lights out. The Falcons stifled Mentor’s hopes many occasions with runners in scoring position.
“She’s a coach’s dream to place in that circle and toe the rubber,” Jones mentioned. “The most effective component is the defense is playing excellent behind her. Tonight was the initial run we’ve offered up on the season. It speaks for itself, we played excellent defense behind her and with her strikeout totals and the way she pitches, we’re a unsafe group.”
Soon after the lone Mentor run, the floodgates opened and Fitch poured it on.
Ayla Ray plated two off a double in the bottom of the fourth, Samantha Severn sent two property as nicely in the bottom of the fifth, and Christina Montgomery hit a two-run bomb just immediately after.
Samantha Heinz rounded the bases twice in the final two innings, after off Severn’s double and then once more in the sixth immediately after freshman Kylie Folkwein hit a two-run homer herself.
Toth, clad in Falcon blue and red “eyeblack,” capped the game off with a solo shot, her initial profession property run. Soon after a slow start out this season, Toth feels like she’s identified her groove.
“I imply it feels excellent,” Toth mentioned. “After these other games, I wasn’t beginning so hot and then ultimately almost everything clicked with my hitting and my fielding and I just felt excellent.”
The youth has been displaying out so far this season for Fitch, and is going to be a significant component of their accomplishment this season.
“We’re breaking in 4 or 5 new starters from final year,” Jones mentioned. “So we’re sort of studying as well. If we preserve finding a single % greater every single day, we’re going to be fine.”
The Falcons open subsequent week with a property-and-property with Boardman, hosting Monday’s contest against the rival Spartans. Then on Wednesday, Fitch welcomes state energy Massillon Perry to town.
