Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders make diplomatic visit to Tehran

Exclusive: Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyya and Islamic Jihad Secretary General Ziyad al-Nahala Meet with Iranian Foreign Minister in Tehran

On March 26, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyya visited Tehran and met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. At the same time, Ziyad al-Nahala, the Secretary General of the Islamic Jihad terrorist organization, also visited Tehran.

Ismail Haniyya was born in Gaza in 1963 and joined the new Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) in 1987. He studied Arabic literature at the Islamic University of Gaza before being deported by Israeli authorities to South Lebanon in 1992. He returned to Gaza a year later and began working at the Islamic University. In 2004, Haniyya became head of the Hamas government in Gaza after the liquidation of Ahmad Yassin and Abd al-Aziz Rantisi. He was elected as the head of Hamas’ politburo in May 2017 and his tenure was extended for another four years on August 1, 2021. Haniyya has been living in Doha (Qatar) for recent years and his personal fortune is estimated at more than $4 billion.

Ziyad al-Nahala was born in Khan Yunis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, in 1953. As a teenager, he was detained several times by Israeli military and intelligence services for extremist actions before being sentenced to life imprisonment as an Arab Liberation Front militant involved in terrorist attacks. He was released on May 21, 1985 as part of an exchange deal between Israel and Palestinians known as “Jibril deal”. After his release from prison, he returned to Gaza where he joined Islamist terrorist organization Islamic Jihad which he helped form with support from Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. He became deputy secretary general of Islamic Jihad in 1995 and took part in first intifada as a brigade commander before being arrested and deported to Lebanon
