The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, addressed the Foreign Ministers of the Twenty-seven on Monday to present his defense on Israel’s security. During his presentation, Borrell stated that he believes that the creation of the State of Palestine is the best guarantee of security for Israel. He based this conclusion on multiple contacts in the region and plans to commission a document from the EU External Action Service outlining options for Gaza’s future.
Borrell emphasized diplomacy as key to achieving humanitarian pauses and avoiding an uncontrollable escalation of the crisis. He highlighted his recent visit to Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia and stressed the need for diplomatic efforts from a humanitarian perspective. Borrell urged ministers to work towards implementing humanitarian pauses approved by the United Nations Security Council and warned against escalation to other regions.
In addition to discussing Gaza, Borrell also mentioned Yemen’s ship hijacking by rebels in response to the war in Gaza. He reiterated that diplomatic efforts are necessary to avoid an uncontrollable escalation and called for rapid implementation of UN resolutions related to Yemen.
Overall, Borrell emphasized diplomacy as crucial in addressing crises such as those in Gaza and Yemen. He urged ministers to prioritize political solutions including creating a State of Palestine through diplomacy and cooperation with other countries in order to achieve lasting peace.
