The Delaware Tourism Office is launching the Delaware Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund, which aims to provide financial support to sports facilities in the state. This fund was established through the FY24 Bond Bill and will be accepting applications from March 1st to April 12th.
Director Jessica Welch of the Delaware Tourism Office explained that this fund was created to support new or existing sports facilities that hold events and tournaments throughout the year, bringing in out-of-state visitors and creating an economic impact at the state and local level. She further stated that this fund will help them remain competitive when it comes to sports tourism.
Delaware has recently hosted several high-profile sports events, including the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the PGA’s 2022 BMW Championship, the MEAC Volleyball Championship, and many regional high school and youth sports events. Welch plans to use this fund to support a range of different facilities.
Events held on weekends during the summer bring a lot of money to the state because they are held consistently and create a reputation at the facility where they take place. Officials expect this fund to help attract more visitors and continue to highlight reasons why people should visit Delaware.
The Delaware Tourism Office will be hosting two informative webinars for potential applicants later this month to learn more about how they can apply for funding from this new initiative.
