In March, a fourth-year student at Southeast University in Nanjing named Xu was exposed on social media for sharing videos of him abusing and killing cats in his dormitory. The online uproar that followed led to an investigation by the Nanjing police. Although the School of Physics did not provide a reason for Xu’s failure, there were numerous complaints about his mistreatment of cats.
Xu’s behavior raised concerns among the public, with some calling for severe consequences while others argued that nurturing talent is more important than punishing him. Despite differing opinions, Xu acknowledged his mistake and wrote an apology letter, promising not to repeat his actions. However, he declined an interview request from a mainland news outlet, expressing concerns about causing more internet backlash with his responses.
According to the university’s admissions guidelines, applicants’ moral and political qualifications are considered when determining whether they meet the criteria for admission. Following his downfall due to the viral cat abuse posts on social media, Xu applied to Lanzhou University but was rejected after being offered an interview that he declined.
The incident has sparked outrage on mainland social media, with many believing that Xu should face severe consequences for his actions towards animals. However, others argue that nurturing talent is more important than punishing him. Despite this debate, it is clear that Xu’s cruel behavior towards cats has raised questions and concerns among the public.
