ST. PETER — St. Peter senior Marty Anderson qualified for the Class A individual state tennis meet again, but this time in singles play.
Anderson lived up to his No. 1 sectional seed by outslugging No. 2-seeded Michael Frost of Holy Family Catholic in a three-set championship clash, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, during Thursday’s final round of the Section 2 individual meet at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
Frost later duplicated his state singles bid from 2022 by fending off Blue Earth Area netter Joe Frundt’s true-second challenge by a 6-1, 6-0 decision.
Anderson and Frost open state individual singles play at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Anderson, a Gustavus Adolphus College tennis commit, gained Thursday’s sectional finale by fending off Frundt, 6-1, 7-5, during their semifinal clash, while Frost posted back-to-back 6-2 set wins over Blue Earth Area’s Jamie Johnson in their semifinal bout.
Frundt then captured the Section 2 bronze medal by defeating Johnson in the third-place match, 6-0, 6-1. Both Blue Earth Area players earned all-sectional honors by placing in the top four.
Litchfield’s Alex Draeger and Braden Olson also garnered return trips to the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center by outlasting St. Peter’s Anders Dixon and Will Elias in the sectional doubles championship, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, on Thursday.
Draeger and Olson, Section 2 state doubles qualifiers last spring, opened semifinal action with back-to-back 6-1 set wins over St. James Area’s Andrei Rivera and Brennan Kern earlier Thursday in St. Peter.
Dixon and Elias gained the doubles finals by rallying to fend off Southwest Christian’s Garrett Lyles and Sean Johnson in a three-set semifinal marathon, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Lyles and Johnson, however, rallied to defeat Rivera and Kern in an extended third-place match, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, to prevent a true-second challenge for a state berth.
The Class A state individual doubles meet begins at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 8, at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
