Breaking Down the Barriers: Dr. Raven Baxter’s Mission to Make Science Accessible and Inclusive

On April 3 at 3:30 p.m., the Nebraska Union Swanson Auditorium will play host to Dr. Raven Baxter, also known as Dr. Raven the Science Maven, for a talk about her mission to democratize science and make it accessible to everyone. Baxter, a molecular biologist and science educator, has become a popular figure in the STEM community thanks to her hip-hop science videos that went viral and led her to start the Black in SciComm and Black in STEM Education movements. Today, she leads the Science Haven, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making science engaging for everyone, regardless of their scientific knowledge or background.

Baxter’s talk will be moderated by Jocelyn Bosley, research impact coordinator in the Office of Research and Economic Development. The two will discuss Baxter’s STEM journey and share insights on the challenges and opportunities in creating a more diverse and inclusive STEM community. They will also explore creative strategies for making science appealing and relevant to a broader audience.

This event is free and open to the public, with additional support from Nebraska EPSCoR as well as several other departments within the university, including Biological Sciences, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, and the Center for Science, Math and Computer Education.
