Baker Hughes chosen to develop natural gas and hydrogen technology

Baker Hughes Takes a Step Towards Sustainable Energy with Partnership with Snam to Supply Hydrogen-Ready Gas Turbines

Baker Hughes has announced that it has been selected by Snam, an Italian energy infrastructure company, to supply turbines for compression that can operate on natural gas and gas blends with up to 10% hydrogen. This partnership will see Baker Hughes provide three NovaLT 12 gas turbine driven compressor trains for a gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy. The technology will play a key role in decarbonizing Snam’s gas network infrastructure as part of the Adriatic Line project.

The new gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy, will support the transport of energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean region to northern Europe via a 425-km long hydrogen-ready pipeline. This innovative project will contribute to the decarbonization of gas networks and enable the creation of a hydrogen economy in the region. Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice President of Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of collaboration in developing technology solutions for decarbonizing energy ecosystems.

Ramaswamy highlighted the company’s commitment to driving innovation and supporting the transition to clean energy sources. The NovaLT12 gas turbine technology is a testament to Baker Hughes’ efforts to provide sustainable solutions that meet the evolving needs of the energy industry. The partnership with Snam signifies a milestone in advancing the decarbonization of gas networks and accelerating the adoption of hydrogen as a viable energy source.
