Amazon Fresh stores, such as the one on Long Island, are no longer using ‘Just Walk Out’ technology

Amazon Ditches Just Walk Out Technology in Oceanside Amazon Fresh Store: Introducing Smart Carts Instead

Amazon has announced changes to its Amazon Fresh stores, including the removal of Just Walk Out technology at the Oceanside store. Instead, smart carts will be introduced, allowing customers to skip the checkout line while also being able to monitor their spending in real time. The decision to remove Just Walk Out technology was based on customer feedback and is part of a broader effort to renovate the grocery chain.

The Oceanside store is the only Fresh supermarket in New York state and occupies a 47,300-square-foot space previously belonging to Waldbaum’s supermarket. Despite previous disruptions predicted in the grocery sector following Amazon’s entry, the company has faced challenges in finding a successful formula.

In his 2023 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged the company’s ongoing efforts to make a more substantial impact on the physical grocery market. This includes shutting down some underperforming stores and taking a selective approach in opening new stores and renovating existing ones. Just Walk Out technology will still be available in Amazon Go stores and certain smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K., as well as to third-party retailers.
